Long gone are the days of
spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on a professionally built website. Here’s
my guide to getting your business online quickly, easily, but most importantly,
cheaply.
1. Domain name
The domain name is the
website address, for example, myfavouritevouchercodes.co.uk.
Ideally, you want to use your business name or some keywords related to it, for
your domain name, but you might have to try a few alternatives as what you want
might not be available.
Keep the following things in
mind when you’re registering your domain:
- Make sure it’s easy to remember
- Purchase both .co.uk and .com so that potential customers can find you easily
- If your business name has a common misspelling, make sure you buy that one too.
2. Web hosting
Once you have a domain name
you will need somewhere for your website to live. A business website is like a
shop window, so if choosing a domain is the equivalent of choosing a business
name then signing up to a webhost is the same as renting a shop in the real
world.
Some website builders, such
as Moonfruit and 1and1, offer complete packages for convenience, so
you don’t have to worry about purchasing a domain independently or finding a
suitable web host.
3. Design
There are loads of website
builders around these days, so even the biggest technophobes can get online.
These editors are referred to as WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) as you simply
point and click. You don’t need any coding or design experience to create one
of these websites, it’s as easy as editing a text document or image.
4. Finding your business on Google
Once your site is ready, you
need to think about how your potential customers will find it. Think about how
you would start if you were looking for a particular service – probably a
search engine.
Your first job then is to
make sure that they know you exist, by submitting your URL to Google and Bing,
or any other search engines.
There are other ways to
advertise too, things like Facebook and Twitter are fast-becoming one of the
preferred ways for customers to get in touch. By increasing your online
presence, more people will be able to find you and buy from you.
